Track Day Prep

From Woofcast #3. This is db’s note page…

Track Days

  • NOT racing. Driver training.
  • First time out, make sure there are instructors!
  • Relax. Don’t drive beyond your limit. Don’t try to hard.
  • Listen to the instructors. Most of them are professional race car drivers
  • HAVE FUN!

Be Prepared — Personal

  • Long pants, long sleeve shirts.
  • New helmet regs. Need SNELL2000 (check this)
  • Gloves for sweaty palms or hot weather
  • Comfortable shoes
  • Hat (to protect against helmet head)
  • Water, Gatorade. No SODA!
  • Snacks! Trail mix, beef jerky, fruit. Stay away from junk.
  • Eat a good breakfast!
  • Get a good nights sleep. You will the 2nd night for sure.

Be Prepared — MINI

  • Tech inspection: Lug nuts…CHECK BEFORE EVERY RUN!
  • Tech inspection: Check tire pressure
  • Empty your car. Nothing loose in glovebox, under center console, backseat, boot. Remove cashtray and check rear passenger storage cubby.
  • Clean your car, especially windscreen and boot window!
  • Make sure everything is tight.
  • Check helmet for scratches.
  • Check seatbelt for operation
  • On the Track
  • Be relaxed.
  • Listen to instructors.
  • Don’t be afraid to get passed.
  • Too amp’ed up? Pull off for a minute.
  • Focus on smooth driving. Tire squealing is bad.
  • Don’t be afraid to use your brakes!
  • Don’t be afraid to hit the redline. That’s what the rev-limitter is for.
  • Leave ASC/DSC on, especially if it’s your first time.

Extra Stuff

  • Schroth Harness
  • Suspension upgrades: Rear sway (yes), front sway (not until you’ve had some track time).
  • Brake upgrades: Rotors, pads
  • Tires: DITCH THE RUN FLATS!

Hopefully this is helpful to you! If you would like to contribute something to the list, feel free to send it over to db@whiteroofradio.com.
