It was an entertaining show as usual, and I think you should definitely devote some time to the Nav subject.
I agree when you are saying that it will come as standard in cars but it might be sooner than we think. It will be a commodity not only because other brands will offer it as standard, but also because new players, that appear to be external to the auto industry, are fostering a change in that direction.
Personally, I see two things happening in a near future. MINI will offer the Nav as standard, because everyone else is doing it. Or, it will be included in the car for a short period of time until they release something with a better UI, with better energy consumption, and that is cost-efficient for them and the buyers. Although we haven’t had the chance to see it in action (maybe Gabe did) I think MINI Connect is the first step in that direction.
I don’t see MINI keeping on spending time and money developing Nav systems for their vehicles. Why? Because the likes of Apple and Google (will soon release a step-by-step/voice activated direction on Google Maps) are doing a far better job at making softwares and UIs (I mean the radio in the R56, seriously? What if they do the same screw-up for a GPS?). Instead, I see them working closely with those brands, and other companies too, on mobile device integration and apps development (i.e. Ford and Microsoft). Indeed, we all realize at this point that we are not only talking about Nav but a bunch of other options. We can already do cool things in our cars using our mobile phones and car makers acknowledge that. Instead of being left out of this market they will join forces with all sorts of mobile device players to offer us, a better and more fun driving experience.

Todd and DB, thanks for the PhillyMINI love. With Philly only being a drive-thru this year and it being mid-week, we are still figuring out what we are doing. This year, we might only be able to give you a six-pack of brew and some cigars for the road.
Some of us are thinking we should invade New York to show them how we roll in Philly…
